Linux vs. Windows

So, I’ve been thinking about switching from using a Windows OS to a Linux OS for a while now. Like most “computer nerds”, I’ve never been overly impressed with Windows. For such an expensive, closed source thing, it’s sure buggy and bloated. Plus, there’s the whole evil corporation with a monopoly on the industry thing that doesn’t sit well with me.
There are tons and tons of Linux based OS’s to choose from. I’m thinking about going with one of the versions of Ubuntu.

One thing that is stopping me from wiping Windows from my hard drive right this second is that I’m nervous about giving up the programs that I’ve gotten used to using, such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc. Some say that there are ways to run programs written for Windows on Linux using emulation, but then doesn’t that kind of defeat the purpose of going to Linux? Ya, it does. I’m sure that there are Linux programs that are just as good, I just have to find them, get used to using them, etc.

Another thing that really concerns me is that in perusing various web sites, I’ve seen a lot of statements that videos encoded with Windows are a lot better quality than ones encoded with Linux. I do quite a bit of video capturing, editing, encoding, etc. so the prospect of having to settle for so-so quality doesn’t make me very happy. I could always do my video work on one of the other PC’s in my house running Windows, but again that kind of defeats the purpose.
But are those statements even true? Or are the people making those statements just using crappy Linux video programs, thus tainting the results?

Someone on the Ubuntu forums wrote to me that if those statements were true, why would Disney and Pixar use Linux according to this article?
What’s your opinion? What programs do you use to work with video in Linux, and what do you think of the results?
What Linux OS is your favorite?

young mind

I wish I could re-train my mind to work like a child’s. I dabble with web and graphic design, but I’ve never taken the time to learn Flash. I’ve opened the program before, and almost immediately decided that I wouldn’t “get it” without devoting tons of time to it. So I closed it and moved on. I don’t need to use Flash to produce a web site.

I have an 11 year old daughter who loves to use the computer. She has her own WordPress based web site that I set up for her, and she’s quite proud of. I helped her customize the theme. I’ve taught her some basic HTML coding and graphic design in the past. She’s interested in learning more, and I figure it wouldn’t hurt for her to have those skills under her belt, so I installed Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Flash on her computer so she could mess around with them.
That same day, she already had Flash worked out, and had created a stop motion video in it!

What is it about our minds that changes as we get older? It’s not that we loose the desire or ability to learn new things. We don’t loose intelligence. So why is it that I can’t even stand the thought of opening Flash and trying to figure it out, while my young daughter pretty much attacked it and made it hers?

Is it our past failures, and not wanting to have that feeling again that stops us from trying? While a child that’s never really had any major failures or setbacks simply believes that they can do anything? Thus their quest for knowledge isn’t tainted by thoughts like “I don’t know why I’m trying this; I’ll just mess it up,etc….”. They just believe they can do it, and they do it.

Wow, I’m really butchering this post. I’m horrible at expressing my thoughts. It’s perfect in my head; a jumbled mess of random thoughts in text form…. But hopefully someone gets what I’m trying to say.

I want a 2008 Dodge Challenger

I don’t think I’ve ever posted about this (haven’t really posted about much at all), but the original Dodge Challenger has been my dream car for years and years. One of my uncles restores classic cars, and one day when I was 15 or so his family came to visit. They rolled into the driveway in a “Sublime” green Challenger and I can’t even begin to describe how impressed with it I was. It was perfectly restored, the chrome was shining, and I was in love. I’ve wanted one ever since.
I’m a huge fan of muscle cars (especially Mopar muscle). The Challenger is my favorite, though. There’s just something about it. I love the body line, and it’s stance. It looks as thought it’s about to “pounce”. Just plain badass.

You may have heard that they’re going to start making it again in 2008. I’ve been on the mailing list, and I just got an e-mail with the subject “Order Your 2008 Challenger SRT8 Now”. It’s official – they’re coming! Dealerships are now taking orders for a limited edition SRT8 that will be shipping sometime in the spring. Of course I don’t forsee being able to afford one anytime soon, and will probably sob pathetically each time I pass one on the road. But I’m still pretty darn excited! Maybe once I’ve saved up enough money, they’ll have started making it in green- that’s it, I’ll just say I’m holding out for that lol. The orange is pretty sweet too, though… And the black….. I’ll take three!!!!
Someday……………..

Covered In Bees available on iTunes, I don’t like snow

I just saw that Covered In Bees’ first album, Portland Death Punk Vol. #1 is now available on iTunes. If you’re a punk, metal, alternative, etc. music fan, you should go download this NOW! You have no excuses! You don’t need to come to Maine to buy their CD at Bullmoose, it’s right there for you to download! They are a Maine band, and the singer is an old pal of mine. But my opinion is not biased at all! For real. They will kick your ass.

I just got done shoveling about a foot of snow from my driveway. I hate shoveling snow. Oddly enough, one song on the above album contains the lyrics “I don’t like to shovel snow”.

skin too thin

Helloooooooo! Just feeling the need to express something that’s on my mind: I was going around the ‘net today making sure my businesses were properly linked in the major search engines, etc. when I came across my web design business listing on Yahoo! local. I added that listing quite a while ago, and hadn’t been back to look at it for some time.
I saw that I had a rating of one star, and my mood plummeted dangerously low instantly as if my dog were just run over in front of my eyes. I’ve never worked with anyone that wasn’t satisfied that I know of, so I can’t imagine who would have rated me one star? Unless it was just some random bored person that decided to give me one star because they didn’t like the business name or something……….
I wish rating systems on sites like that weren’t so anonymous so that any Joe-schmoe can click away and ruin a good person’s reputation. I really can’t imagine anyone that knows me or has worked with me would have done that.
I really need to work on having more of a “thick skin”. I’ve always been over-sensitive to things like this. People say that anyone in a creative sort of industry should have a thick skin, and take criticism with a grain of salt; that’s one trait I’m lacking. I just wish I knew who did it, and why? Oh well……….moving on now……….. :)
So, how’s your day?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello! Well, another Thanksgiving has come and gone. It seems like it should still be summer. It snowed here a couple days ago, which I must say I wasn’t overly happy about. Snow is pretty when it’s falling, but once it starts staying on the ground it’s just depressing because it turns into an ugly slushy mess, and it inhibits travel, etc. OK, enough whining about that.

I’m feeling slightly craptacular today because it’s “black Friday”, and there’s hardly anything in my Hot Pink Flamingo boutique for people to buy. I had hoped by this time to have had a good amount of stock in the boutique, and the holiday shopping season would really help to jump start things. I guess it’s not too late, though.

The web design business has picked up some, so I’m really happy about that. If you know anyone that could use those services, pleeeease refer them to me. I’ll be your best friend!

Well, enough messing around, it’s time for me to face the day and get something accomplished. I’m having a heck of a time getting motivated to do anything today! Maybe I’ll go get another cup of coffee……
